Air Conditioner CyclingSummer peaking utilities often cycle air conditioners to reduce their summer peak
demand. Forecasting the impact of these programs which use a fixed duty-cycle has been
difficult because controlling oversized air conditioners provides no benefit to the
utility so these customers become "free riders". Our adaptive cyclers monitor the natural run-time of air conditioners to automatically adjust its cycle to provide a specified percentage demand reduction. This makes forecasting easier and equalizes the impact on customers. The adaptive feature is much more effective for demand reduction than fixed-cycle programs. If a direct control program has been implemented the ACT-40 can be used to double the demand reduction by adding adaptive cycling under utility control.
