Air Conditioner Cycling

Summer peaking utilities often cycle air conditioners to reduce their summer peak demand. Forecasting the impact of these programs which use a fixed duty-cycle has been difficult because controlling oversized air conditioners provides no benefit to the utility so these customers become "free riders".

Our adaptive cyclers monitor the natural run-time of air conditioners to automatically adjust its cycle to provide a specified percentage demand reduction. This makes forecasting easier and equalizes the impact on customers. The adaptive feature is much more effective for demand reduction than fixed-cycle programs. If a direct control program has been implemented the ACT-40 can be used to double the demand reduction by adding adaptive cycling under utility control.

We are very excited about the results obtained by our adaptive cyclers in recent tests. The following items describe adaptive cycling:

  1. ACT-20 and ACT-30 Series specification sheet
  2. Adaptive Cycling of Air Conditioners - Using ACT-40 Adaptive Cyclers with a Load Control Receiver (950202)
