Residential Demand Control

Residential demand rates have been around for many years. Dencor has manufactured demand controllers for over 20 years.

The following are products used for demand control:

  1. Series 200D specification sheet - For control of loads in response to time-of-use demand rate.
  2. Tips for Low Demand at Home
  3. Model 809R specification sheet - For control of loads in response to 24 hr/day demand rate.
  4. Model 808/812 specification sheet
  5. Model D and LC Interlock specification sheet Interlocks prevent loads from operating simultaneously. They effectively decrease the connected load for a home.
  6. The Interaction of Rates, Control Equipment, and Customer Behavior (Compares customer response to TOUD rates for three utilities.)
  7. What a Well Equipped Customer Can Do to Shift Energy Use (This gives some background information and early results.)

All of our demand control equipment have inputs designed to be used by a direct control system to override other preprogrammed modes of operation of the controller. Creative use of this equipment will give utilities a competitive advantage and help them keep their load and not lose heating to other fuels.

The following examples show several ways of using a demand controller:

1. Control Demand 24 Hours Every Day

Demand is controlled at all times.

2. Control Demand at Specified Times Each Day

When a Time-of-Use rate is available the demand only needs to be controlled during peak cost periods. Often no control is required on weekends.

3. Control Demand only when the
Utility Sends out a Control Signal

When an interruptible rate is available the demand needs to be controlled only when the utility is in danger of peaking. The utility sends a signal when demand control is needed.

4. Combination

It is also possible to combine these forms of control for rates which require demand control at one level for day-to-day operations and at a different level when the utility needs additional demand reduction.
