Tips for Low Demand at Home

You may want to save money by keeping your demand low (4kW or less). To do this it is necessary to keep from operating several heat producing appliances simultaneously. Appliance which produce heat include:

  • Hairdryers
  • Toasters
  • Coffee Makers
  • Electric Ranges

The electric range is especially important. The following procedures will help you keep your operation of the range from creating high demands:

1. Keep burners on HI as briefly as possible. Turn down to MED HI when cooking temperature has been reached.

2. Only have one burner on HI at any time.

3. Preheat oven in stages:

a. Preheat to 225°, then wait a few minutes,
b. Preheat to 325°, then wait a few minutes,
c. Increase to final desired temperature.

4. Preheat oven and start baking before using burners.

Typical Demand Requirements

The following data for a typical range will help you determine how much you can do at one time for your particular demand setting:

Large Burner (2.2kW rating)

Setting

Average

Cycle

HI 2.2kW Continuous
MED HI 1.0kW ON 5 Seconds out of 12 seconds
MED .6kW ON 4 Seconds out of 14 seconds
Small Burner (1.3kW rating)

Setting

Average

Cycle

HI 1.3kW Continuous
MED HI .68kW ON 6.3 Seconds out of 12 seconds
MED .5kW ON 5 Seconds out of 13 seconds

Oven (3.8kW rating)

Temp

Average

Cycle

PREHEAT 3.8kW Continuous
400° 1.2kW ON 1:45 out of 5:25 minutes
300° .7kW ON 1:25 our of 7 minutes

Preheating to 400° takes 8 minutes and 10 seconds

Preheating to 200° takes 2 minutes and 25 seconds

Broiler (3.2kW rating) Continuous

Example

By using these tips it is possible to do extensive cooking with demands of 3kW or less.

For example, the following can be operating simultaneously:

Oven at 400°

1.2kW

2 Large Burners on MED (2 @ 0.6 )

1.2kW

Small Burner on MED

0.5kW

2.9kW

However, if they are all started at the same time:

Oven (Preheat)

3.8kW

2 Large Burners on HI (2 @ 2.2 )

4.4kW

Small Burner on HI

1.3kW

9.5kW

Thus, with proper sequencing, you can cook using demands which are only one-third of those experienced when everything is started simultaneously.  A little thought can save a lot of money.
